Manufacturing in the News

The cover story on Time Magazine for the April 12, 2013 issue was an article titled "Made in the USA- Manufacturing is back but where are the jobs?". There has been a lot of press lately on the state of manufacturing in America.  Here are a few articles that speak to manufacturing jobs and bringing manufacturing back to America from overseas.

"How 'Made in the USA' is Making a Comeback"
The number of manufacturing jobs in America has been increasing over the last couple of years. Companies that once only produced goods overseas are starting to bring production back to the US. The price of oil in other countries has increased recently, and workers in India and China have fought for and won higher wages. These factors make building factories in America more appealing because in comparison to outsourcing production, keeping production back home is cheaper. This steady increase in jobs due to American manufacturing does not seem to be slowing down, though they do require more education than factory jobs of the past needed. To read more from this Time Magazine article, click here.

Manufacturing Is Going (to New) Places: And What That Means About Jobs
Manufacturing jobs are changing. Manufacturing is now considered part of the “knowledge economy” because there is a need for highly educated, skilled workers. Since many factories are becoming more and more automated, the repetitive assembly positions that used to give low-skilled workers jobs are being filled by machines. This emphasizes the need to continue educating the workforce and providing training. Schools are starting to work in conjunction with future employers to create educational programs that get students ready for employment right out of high school. "Is U.S. manufacturing making a comeback or is it just hype?"
Wonkblog's article talks about how American companies are "reshoring" and bringing production back to the US from overseas. Now because of the low natural gas prices in the US and rising wages in countries like China and India where companies used to outsource production. Economists are not sure if the increase in manufacturing jobs in America is going to keep rising or if it is just a short blip in the business cycle. However, if businesses keep bringing production back home, and other countries keep moving their production to the US, then the number of jobs should increase steadily. This is just the beginning, but along with government programs and the merging of private firms, degree programs, and research labs, there will be a significantly larger number of jobs in America. What do you think about this trend in manufacturing?  Is there work coming back from overseas in the markets you serve?

CCAI's April 2013 Economic Summary

According to the CCAI (Chemical Coaters Association International) Executive Economic Summary for April 2013, seven of the twelve sectors that they measure are showing generally positive trends. The sectors that are positive are new automobile and light truck sales, new home starts, steel consumption, industrial capacity utilization, Purchasing Managers Index, capital expenditure, and credit movement. The sectors that are negative are metal pricing, durable goods shipments, appliance activity, factory orders, and transportation activity.

New automobile and truck sales, though consumer sales peaked last year, are still going strong. Dealers are buying cars for their inventories and car manufacturers keep making cars and trucks, ready for the resurgence of consumer auto purchases. The new home starts sector is showing rapid growth and show signs of continuing its upward climb. However, there is some fear that there will not be enough credit available for new buyers. Steel consumption is going strong right now, but the future is not bright for this sector, as cars made of aluminum hit the market and public sector construction projects are put on hold. Industrial capacity utilization is growing, but hasn’t reached the point that it was in July. The Purchasing Managers Index is just over the expansion mark, due in part to the slowing down of the industrial sector. Though capital expenditure has a positive trend, but companies have been spending more on capital equipment than on hiring more employees. Credit movement is much lower than desirable, but is at least still positive.

Metal pricing is on a downward slope, but the future might be a little more positive for aluminum, gold, and scrap metal. Durable goods shipments have been slower in the last year because of the volatility of the aerospace market and the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan. Appliance activity has decreased mainly because it is so closely tied to the housing market. Factory orders have been down and have been extremely volatile, especially in the consumer sector. Transportation activity is negative, according to the TransSystems Transportation Activity Index.

The CCAI Executive Economic Summary is a benefit on CCAI membership.

GenX Update: 958G-203 & 958G-303

GenX: DuPont has committed to no longer make, buy or use perfluorooctanoic acid, (PFOA) by 2015, or earlier if possible. A new DuPont technology includes a processing aid that enables DuPont to make fluoropolymers without the use of PFOA. With this new technology, DuPont has commercialized products for Industrial Fluoropolymers.

Intech will be converting customers to the use of fluoropolymers made with GenX technology as these products become available and as our stock of the current products are depleted.  We will make announcements as each one of our products transition to the new GenX product.  The codes for the products are also transitioning.

Based on internal testing, DuPont expects that the new products can be used as replacements for the historical products with minimal processing adjustments.

Please also note that sales of these products will now be priced and packaged in kilograms (kg) instead of liquid weights (gallons).

Products being transitioned:               New Code:
958-203                                          958G-203-3.5KG
958-303                                          958G-303-3.5KG

Intech Services visits DuPont’s Parlin Plant

Intech Services employees Chris Dohl, Chris Lord, Vicki Bobeck, and Karen Nardo visited the DuPont Parlin plant in Parlin, New Jersey. The Parlin plant is where DuPont makes fluoropolymer coatings. Intech and DuPont make a continual effort to work together seamlessly and make connections from the manufacturing to the sales effort.  For Intech, it was a great experience to understand the process of production of the fluoropolymer coatings at the plant.  Another benefit of the trip was to continue to improve the ability to work together with DuPont employees on supply, shelf life, and certifications.  Chris Dohl had the opportunity to present the market and end uses for DuPont Teflon® industrial coatings and the plant workers were very interested in how these coatings are used after leaving the plant.  Intech also impressed the importance of product quality and attention to detail with the production schedule in order to continue to provide customers with high quality DuPont™ Teflon® industrial coatings in a timely manner.
