Quality Shop Series: Buying versus Making Hooks
The “Make-Or-Buy” decision is the act of choosing between manufacturing a product in-house or purchasing it from an external supplier. In a make-or-buy decision, the two most important factors to consider are cost and availability of production capacity.
A shop may decide to purchase the product rather than produce it, if it is cheaper to buy or if it does not have sufficient production capacity to produce it in-house. With the incredible rise in global outsourcing over the past decades, the make-or-buy decision is one that managers and shop owners must consider in order to keep operational costs as low as possible. The following is an example of a cost analysis for the make vs. buy decision analyzing industrial hooks, assuming the shop has sufficient production capacity. Specifically hook part number C-4076, which is a “C” style standard hook 4”long 0.076 wire.

Assumptions
Employee pay rate (straight hourly rate): $8.00 per hour
Cutting wire to size: 500 pieces per hour average (one wire length cut per 7 seconds from Mighty Hooks time study)
Forming hook (2 ends per hook): 250 pieces per hour average (one hook per 14 seconds from Mighty Hooks time study)
Wire cost: 0.076 diameter x 8.5” long hard drawn spring steel wire to produce 4” long standard “C” style hook = $0.011 each (base upon prevailing market pricing for wire).
Savings from buying hooks from CoaterOne vs. making them in-house:
$118.00 - $56.43 = $61.57 ( 52% savings)The above cost analysis for buying vs, making hooks in-house (assuming the shop has sufficient production capacity) reveals it is more cost effective to purchase the C-407 “C” style standard hooks from Intech Services CoaterONE e-marketplace rather than to produce them in-house. Hooks: Panel Hangers and Magnet Systems
In February, we are featuring hooks
on our blog with some of our offerings from Mighty Hook. Mighty Hook manufactures hooks and racking systems to meet the specific needs of each customer for any powder or liquid industrial finishing job. Intech is proud
to offer a very large and diverse line of reliable and economical hanging
solutions for the industrial coating world.
Panel
Hangers:
Made from
cold-rolled sheet metal, with three different suspension holes at various distances
for a normal wire hook, four-inch-long panel hangers can hold metal sheets with
a thickness of up to 0.080" from one end and 0.157" sheets can be
suspended at the other end. Custom sizes can be made, depending on your hanging
needs. Spring stainless steel panel clamps can be attached to a product, then the
product can be hung from one of the holes in the clamp.
This
magnetic system leaves few suspension marks and eliminates cooling problems. This
system consists of magnet holders in zinc/aluminum, a magnet pressed into the
holder, and a silicone rubber mask over the holder. Two metal plates are placed
inside grooves on the side of the magnet. When too much paint has accumulated
on the metal plates, the suspender can be fixed by replacing the metal plates.
For more
information on hooks and hanging products, visit www.intechservices.com or contact MaryHartsoe (302-366-8530) to talk about your hanging requirements.

Teflon Technical FAQ: Dry Spray
Every day at Intech we receive requests for technical help with DuPont™ Teflon® industrial coatings. If you have a technical question, please feel free to call and speak to one of our technical sales representatives. Once a month, we post a frequently asked question here on our blog.
Answer: This is called dry spray, and can be caused by several different factors. The viscosity could be incorrect, or it could be an improper choice of thinner, reducer, or activator. Spraying too fast can cause dry spray, as well as the air pressure being too high. The spray gun might be too far from the surface while applying, or the gun may be improperly set up. Always refer to the fact sheets for proper application.
If you need with a specific question, please feel free to call us at 302-366-8530.
