Properties of Teflon: Non-Wetting
DuPont™ Teflon® industrial coatings are highly durable and long lasting performance coatings that have a distinct application process and qualities that offer solutions in a variety of industrial markets. This series of blogs will highlight one of these inherent properties of Teflon® coatings and how these properties can solve a variety of problems.
Non-Wetting: Teflon® coatings are both hydrophobic and oleophobic, making cleanup
easier and more thorough. Hydrophobic substances repel the polar ions in water
and resist wetting. The low surface energy of the coatings means that the
cohesive forces in the water are strong enough to make the water bead up and
not spread across the surface of the coating. This property of Teflon® coatings
is especially important for coating laboratory glassware, such as beakers and
test tubes, in order to minimize cross-contamination. PTFE shows the best
non-wetting characteristics.
